Peru is leading exporter of fresh asparagus
There are 105 companies that produce and export Peruvian asparagus. Of these, only 9 account for half of the total value of exports.
The U.S. is the main market for fresh asparagus. In 2013, exports to this destination amounted to U.S. $253.6 million, 20% more than in 2012. The UK ranks second, with $51.2 million dollars in asparagus exports, 75% more than in the last year. Peru exports fresh asparagus to 41 countries around the world.
Peru is also the largest exporter of canned asparagus. Exports of canned asparagus amount to 149.6 million dollars annually. Its main markets are Spain, France and the United States.
Exports of frozen asparagus, however, still haven’t achieved the leadership status of its counterparts. China is the leading exporter of frozen asparagus with a total export value of 673 million dollars, while Peru is ranked 8th with only $50.2 million dollars.
