Lucien de Wit, PeDe: 30% less available than last season

Greek watermelon season is in full swing

Last week Remco de Boer and Lucien de Wit of PeDe visited the Greek producers of the Pantazis watermelons. PeDe will once again be working exclusively with the largest watermelon producer in Greece. PeDe received the first melons more than two weeks ago, but the season didn't fully start until last week.

"At the moment the melons are being harvested from the tunnels. The start of the harvest from the open field is expected around 5-10 June. Until then, the available volumes are limited in their ability to meet the large demand," says Lucien de Wit. "The variety is Dumara (LUNGA) and they are packaged in bins with the sortings AA (8kg ++) and A (4-8 kg). These are the oblong melons that are very sweet in flavour."

Trucks of melons will arrive at PeDe every day, and the season generally lasts until mid August, depending on the weather in Greece. The total available volume of these melons in Greece is around 30% less than last season," concludes Lucien.
