WSU invents new apple, calls it 'Cosmic Crisp'

Researchers at Washington State University have come up with a new apple that they're calling "Cosmic Crisp." Don't expect to see the apple in stores anytime soon, though.

The school will first release the apple to Washington state apple growers, via a lottery, in 2017. The new apple won't be available widely to consumers until 2019.

WSU said the new "Cosmic Crisp" apple is a cross between Enterprise and Honeycrisp apples.

"The large, juicy apple has a remarkably firm and crisp texture. Its exceptional flavor profile provides ample sweetness and tartness, making it an excellent eating apple. In addition to being delicious, it is slow to brown when cut and maintains its texture and flavor in storage for more than a year," WSU said in a statement about the new apple.
