"Quick sales of asparagus despite large supply"
"Despite the warm weather, the quality of the asparagus is also very good. The expectation is that if we get cooler weather over the next few weeks, the production will reduce quickly. The asparagus plants have given a lot of kilos already," says the salesman. "We expect the asparagus season to be over for the most part by St John's Day. And it has been good. The power of asparagus is that the season still has a beginning and an end."
The clock price of double A asparagus was around 3.50-4 Euro on Wednesday. "The demand on the domestic market has been good for years. Dutch consumers always choose Dutch asparagus. And they are bought by retail, wholesale and catering. This season hasn't had any real dips, apart from a single bad week. This is the result of the growers' efforts to either bring their own harvest season forward or to move it back, to prevent peaks in supply," says Sjraar.
The sales of green asparagus were a little more difficult this season, especially in the period that Spain was still on the market. Now the 'green gold' is also being drawn onto the market despite large production. "Green asparagus are easier to sell during barbecue weather than white ones," explains Sjraar.
