Tomatoes and peppers hit rock bottom prices in Almeria

Far from improving, prices for the major horticultural products are either stagnant or continue on a downward trend. Between 9 and 16 May, Almeria's two flagship products, peppers and tomatoes, have hit rock bottom prices, with vine tomatoes reaching between 10 and 20 cents per kilo and green Lamuyo peppers standing at around 15 cents.

As for the other products, Xera beans, for example, have gone from 2.54 Euro per kilo on 9 May to just 1.60 Euro a week later.

Melon is one of the best-selling products. At the auction of Costa de Almería, the Galia reached between 0.45 and 0.55 Euro per kilo on 16 May, while a day earlier growers received between 0.37 and 0.53 Euro for the Piel de Sapo and around 0.52 Euro for the Yellow.

For their part, cucumber prices do not even cover production costs. The French variety barely reaches 0.15 Euro per kilo and the short one stands at around 0.30 Euro.

The situation also remains dire for courgette producers. Prices, despite some ups and downs, have reached an average of 0.35 Euro per kilo, with final auction sales at around 0.25 Euro. The largest calibres reached between 0.10 and 0.30 Euro.

Aubergines are in a more favourable position, selling at quite reasonable prices. Producers are being paid an average of 0.35 to 0.60 Euro per kilo.

Meanwhile, tomatoes have been sold at really low prices in recent days. The Daniela variety has not surpassed the 0.20 Euro; the Pear reached between 0.13 and 0.38 Euro and vine tomatoes stood between 0.10 and 0.18 Euro.

Lastly, green bell peppers are the peppers reaching the worst prices, standing at around 0.10 Euro, which naturally entails losses for the growers. As for other varieties, the red does not exceed 0.28 Euro, the green Morron reached around 0.50 Euro per kilo and the red has fluctuated a lot, reaching between 0.36 and 0.65 Euro. Green Italian pepper prices ranged between 0.35 and 0.46 Euro per kilo.
