Agricola Aversana (Eboli - Italy):

"Increasing specialization recorded in baby leaf salads"

"Our annual volume of baby leaf salads is about 4,500 tons, of which 70% is represented by rocket. 75 hectares are in polytunnels and all year round. Last year we registered generally a light tendency on the program prices, if it is true that Italy is gaining positions in this segment, we believe that one of the main reasons is the continued growth of specialization in this sector, therefore an increase in quality and greater ability from the entrepreneur."

The persons responsible for Agricola Aversana of Eboli (SA) are reporting so to FreshPlaza. The firm, located in the heart of the Piana del Sele, is a company that produces, processes and packages selected salads, vegetables and fruits, and a member of APOC Salerno since 2008.

Within half an hour of harvesting, our products are subjected to a reduction of the temperature thanks to the use of the technology, vacuum cooling, from which it is then passed into the cold storage to go directly to the refrigerated transport lorry (on which there are implemented actions for monitoring the efficiency and hygienic status of transport). This careful process sees no interruption in the cold chain and makes our salads boast an excellent shelf-life."

Principal markets for the baby leaf salad are Northern Europe and Russia. The goods are destined for 80% of the Great distribution (GDO).

"As for the competition, we can say that the number of Italians and foreign growers who convert their production and focusing on baby leaf salad is always increasing – the company confirms also that – the growers in the South of Italy coincides with our production schedule, which goes from October to May. During the summer months the companies in Northern Italy and Northern Europe have their own production, so the competition is higher and the demand is lower, as their production meets all domestic demand in their respective markets."

During its thirty years of activity, Agricola Aversana has succeeded in conquering a primary position among the great producers in this area, making incisive its presence in the national and foreign markets, and at the same time developing and valorising the agricultural products of the region of Campania, particularly those of the "Piana del Sele".

The promotion of the products of Agricola Aversana is submitted to Filoverde Srl, with the brand "Fruver" is a leader in the sale of fruit and vegetables for over twenty years. These two firms together have given birth to only one group that covers the entire value chain, from production to marketing.

Agricola Aversana has as reference for the production implementation of GlobalGAP protocol. It supplies only fruit and vegetables under the grown in Italy label declaring the species, variety and origin (region); prefers typical varieties of the production chosen and does not sell GMO products.

The procedures in place for the supplier qualification and procurement of raw materials include:
• Controls (analysis) of pesticide residues;
• Microbiological analysis of water and on finished products;
• Audits;
• Checks on samples of the finished product;
• Signing of contracts / supply agreements.

The production is carried out on land partly owned and partly rented, for a total of about 215 ha, according to the following calendar of production:

Regarding fennel, this vegetable is produced throughout the year. "From November to May on our sites in the Piana del Sele (Eboli SA), Calabria and Puglia, while from June to October, the production is concentrated in the Abruzzo region. The Main varieties which are cultivated are Tiziano, Spartaco, and Donatello, spread over about 140 hectares, for this year volumes available are approximately 7,000 tons."

Frequent and intense winter rains have caused the phenomena of decay, with considerable damage to the product. Compared to last year the managers do not record large changes in price, which on average is around € 0.80 kg.

"The increased demand for fennel comes from Northern Europe; our competitors in this case are the producers of Campania, Puglia and Calabria."

Quality System

The company's factory occupies an area of about 5,000 square meters internally and other 1,000 square meters of cold storage and an external relevance of about 20,000 square meters.
