"Wim Vandepoel: "I am amazed by the shelf life"

Fruit Vandepoel is the exclusive distributor of 'De Violéta'

Fruit Vandepoel has marketed the apple 'De Violéta' for three years but due to the growing production and the positive responses from clients it will be permanently added to the assortment this season. "We are the exclusive distributor for Belgium." says owner Wim Vandepoel proudly. "Our customers like the Violéta. It is an apple that has a lot of advantages. It has a gorgeous colour, is very crispy and has a delicious aroma."

'Violéta au Champagne-Ardennes'
"It sounds like 'Coq au vin', 'Canard à l'orange' or 'Cuisses de grenouille'. But this is no culinary prowess produced by a French chef cuisine, it is an attractive apple. Violéta comes from France. It is an apple which is only grown in the northern French Champagne-Ardennes. The white chalk rich soil, which is very typical for the Champagne region, add to the crispy structure and the perfect sweet-sour ratio of this apple. This region's climate with its slightly colder winters and slightly warmers summers mean that the Violéta grows to be an intensely red apple."

The product is still young, so not much can be said about the production yet. "But this will increase with the years," says Wim. "The apple is sold under the brand name Violéta. The price formation is slightly higher than that of the classic apple varieties and lower than brands like Pink Lady. Violéta is available from April until August/September."

Purple red
Wim says that the Violéta has its unique purple red colouring to thank for its name. "It is a Belgian made apple grown in the Northern French Thorin. It does well in the hills of the Champange-Ardennes where it is mainly canola, alfalfa and wheat fields that grace the landscape. The first Violéta trees were planted a number of years ago. Meanwhile, multiple hectares of these trees are productive and the production grows each year. Violéta retains its firmness for a very long time and its aroma is best done justice after one day out of cooling. It is a real 'scale' apple."

Long shelf life
When the apple was first presented to Wim Vandepoel he was immediately enthusiastic. "I was ready to go when Violéta was launched on the Belgian market." Due to his enthusiasm for the apple, he enthused customers about the variety. When he first presented Violéta to his clientele in 2010, he himself was astounded by the long shelf life of this apple. "Violéta is an apple that will grow to be the showpiece of the apples in the future. When other varieties have to deal with loss of taste from time to time, and become dry, Violéta remains perfectly juicy and crunchy. This is in part due to the unique soil it is grown on," according to Wim Vandepoel.
