'Bubbleberries' go on sale in UK

'Bubbleberries', which look like a small strawberry but have a flavour which is supposedly reminiscent of the chewable gum, are being sold in Waitrose from this week.

The berries, which are officially called Fragaria moschata, are also known as "musk strawberries" or "hautboy strawberries" and were a popular treat in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Like many once-popular fruits, however, the berries faded from public consciousness, though they still grow wild in some forests in central Europe and can be easily cultivated in gardens.

Waitrose buyer Bikki Baggott said "This is one of the most aromatic berries we have ever sold at Waitrose. The bubbleberry has an incredibly strong perfume which will take you straight back to your childhood. They have an incredibly familiar taste, which is much more likely to be found in a sweet shop than the fruit and vegetable aisle.
