BelOrta expects to trade 350,000 kgs of red and 300,000 kgs of blueberries this year

First Belgian red and blue berries at Veiling BelOrta

The first Belgian red and blueberries of the new season were offered and sold at Veiling BelOrta this morning. This premier is the starting signal for the new berry season. Veiling BelOrta expects to trade 350,000 kg of red berries this season, over a period that started today and will run until Christmas. The red berry season starts with the variety Junifer. In the month of June it will continue with the early variety Jonkheer van Tets, then go on the peak in July with Rovada.



A bunch of red berries looks excellent as a decoration on desserts. Red berries also give a fresh, sour flavour to a fruit salad, yoghurt or milkshake are also very good for our health. They contain high concentrations of vitamins and fibres. These fruits are also low in calories.

The premier berries, of the variety "Junifer" were grown by the strawberry and soft fruit company Meyers Softfruit from Riemst - www.meyers-softfruit.be. The first supply of red berries, from one crate with 12 125g boxes.

This premier was bought by Metro Cash & Carry Belgium. The first box of 12 x 125 g was sold for the price of 74 Euro per box of 125 g.

Veiling BelOrta auctions off first Belgian blueberries of the new season 
The first Belgian blueberries were also actioned off this week. This delivery consisted of one box of 12 x 125 g and was grown by Albert Royakkers from Kinrooi. This premier was sold to Super Shopping Peltri. The first box of blueberries of 12 x 125 grams was sold for the price of 52 Euro per 125 g box. Super shopping Peltri is an independent family supermarket in which people can shop for the best prices comfortably.

Blueberries are known as one of the healthiest fruits. Many researches have shown that the level of anti oxidants - the preventative defender of the human body - and the total nutritional value of these berries are very high compared to other fruits. This means that blueberries could certainly be a valuable addition to your daily eating patterns. The supply of blueberries is around 300,000 kg annually and stretches until November with a peak in supply in July.

Snow White is the name given to the white strawberries that are now available from BelOrta. This speciality is grown by producer Johan Schuurmans. Not just the fruits skin, but also its flesh is pale white. This exceptional colour makes this strawberry variety a speciality and is extremely suitable for sprucing up any dessert.
