Poland: Eurosad looking for new customers besides Russia

Eurosadis an association of producers and exporter based near Warsaw. The company has beengrowing and selling fruit for more than 20 years and its speciality are apples, although pears and soft fruit are also important products for it. According to PaulinaKołacz, who is responsible for the business side of the firm, around 30 growerswith a total of 700 hectares formpart of Eurosad.

Good quality

Twoof the company’s main customers are Russia and Ukraine. Paulina assures thatdemand from Russian buyers has changed in recent years. "Aroundten years ago, they mostly demanded large apples, and now they are more likelyto prefer smaller calibres. There is an increasing demand in these markets forGolden and Gala apples. The quality of Poland’s apples has greatly improved Inrecent years as a result of investments and subsidies from the EU." Sheexplains that Russia is currently going through an exceptional situation."They now refuse even meat, and fruit will possibly follow. Russia is ourlargest customer, so we are anxiously looking for new markets, for instance, inWestern Europe."

Frutteto

Frutteto is part of Eurosad and was founded in2011. Under the brand Snacki, the company sells sliced apples and carrots in snackpackaging and has recently also launched exotic fruit mixes. According toPaulina, the convenience market is growing. "We entered this market threeyears ago and we thought we would need a few years to convince people. Thatturned out to be disappointing, but Polish consumers are hard to convince. To alarge extent, it is considered more important to feel full than to eat healthy andthe high prices are probably another disadvantage, as for the price of a bag,you can buy a kilo of apples. We must convince them that convenience and healthgo well together." Even in these circumstances, there has been growth. Inthe beginning approximately 500 bags per week were being sold and that figurehas now gone up to 10,000. For the coming years, demand is expected to continuegrowing, considering that the interest in leading a healthy lifestyle isgrowing too. "As a company we want to stimulate growth and therefore wealso supply school canteens. We are one of the few firms offering theseproducts in Poland."

The company started selling its convenienceproducts at petrol stations. "Two months ago, we managed to introduce themto supermarkets and we now deliver to 30 Carrefour outlets. Tastings are also heldin supermarkets to convince customers of how tasty these productscontaining 100% fruit and no additives actually are."
