Southern Hemisphere apple season gets under way in US

“Arrival of organic apples from the Southern Hemisphere have begun in the US and the quality is superb,” said David Posner, President and CEO of Awe Sum Organics. “Although the size profile is much smaller than in recent years due to the series of severe freezes in the growing regions of Chile last September, the timing of our imported organic apples as they enter the market this year will be just right to complement the domestic season, which is quickly wrapping up. The first to arrive are our Royal Galas from Chile and Argentina, followed shortly by our South American Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Braeburn, Fuji, Cripps Pink, and our truly delectable Heirloom Red Delicious apples.”

The Awe Sum Organics South American arrivals of each variety will be followed by most of the same varieties from New Zealand. “Our New Zealand organic apples have an exceptional eating quality, crispness and flavour, and will enable us to supply our customers with high quality organic apples through the summer months, until new crop domestic fruit is available again. The warm days and cool nights during January and February in the Hawkes Bay region where our New Zealand fruit is grown, has produced exceptional apple growing conditions that gave our fruit high colour and a dense, crisp texture with an Awe Sum flavour.” David said.

The organic New Zealand Royal Gala, Braeburn, Fuji, Granny Smith and Cripps Pink apples are consistently some of the finest apples produced in the world. The organic Diva apple is also back this year, living up to its namesake with its intense colour and unbelievable flavour. This beautiful variety was first introduced to the market last year and was so popular that the limited quantities sold out quickly. Awe Sum Organics will have limited volumes of their organic Divas again this season, and production will continue to increase in years to come.

New Zealand’s organic apple crop, due to its outstanding colour and flavour, is continuing to experience an increase in demand from around the world, including Asia, Europe and North America. The consistent 15-20% year over year growth in demand for organic apples, combined with the forecast that this year’s organic Southern Hemisphere crop will be down 20% in volume, while Washington has already run through most of their organic apple inventories much earlier than in recent years will certainly create more of a challenge than in recent years for Awe Sum Organics to keep enough supply for the entire import season this year. Awe Sum Organics, the largest importer of organic apples in North America, imports roughly 90% of all of the organic apples coming into North America from New Zealand, as well as importing fruit from the largest Chilean organic apple grower, and also one of the largest in Argentina. This enables Awe Sum to provide their customers with a consistent supply of Southern Hemisphere organic apples on both coasts of the U.S. and Canada, with all varieties and pack styles throughout the import season.

“The good news for our customers is that by utilizing our supply from our various growing regions, and our many varieties, sizes, and pack styles, we are able to plan our packing and shipping programs to keep our customers across the US and Canada in continuous supply of an Awe Sum line up of delicious, nutritious organic apples from the end of the domestic season to the start of the next.”
