"Harvest a little smaller, but quality and prices good"

Field Fresh Tasmania expects good onion season

The Field Fresh Tasmania (FFT) onion harvest in Tasmania is going according to plan. The total harvest is smaller than that of last season, a decrease of around 15%. "This is due to later planting and the weather conditions," says Luc Delabie. FFT grows and markets around 45,000 tonnes of onions.

Harvest almost in

"The harvest of brown (yellow) onions is 60% complete and we expect it to be finished in mid April. The red onions will probably be harvested at the end of March, around 80% of them are in. Luc indicates that they are busy shipping for the pre-sold programmes at the moment. "Around 40% of the brown onions have been shipped now and around 25% of the red. They go to all European countries, South East Asia (mainly Japan) and some remain on the domestic market."

He indicates that the prices are good. "We expect it to stay this way, we have already sold a lot for good prices. We look towards the season positively, the onions are of good quality so the customers should be satisfied."

Field Fresh Tasmania (FFT) onions are grown on the north west coast of the Island Tasmania. Field Fresh Tasmania has around 50 growers with an average area of 17 hectares per grower. Tasmania is one of the richest horticultural areas on the Southern Hemisphere. Besides supplying onions to Europe, Asia and Australia, the company also supplier walnuts through Walnuts Australia.(www.walnutsaustralia.com.au)
