"Our onions were affected by the early arrival of spring towards the end, so we had to discard up to 40%. We preferred to finish selling our product before starting with the imported one," explained Davide Marmocchi.
"The quality of white onions from Australia (photo above) is higher because their shape is more regular and they are packed in 20 kg bags according to uniform grades (60/80). The first containers of 25 kg bags of Indian white onions (photo below) have also arrived. They are rather regular and look much better than last year."
Both types are sold to markets and distributors in Italy and Northern Europe (mainly Germany and Holland). Often clients re-pack bulbs in smaller packets.
"Our white onions sell at around €0.50/kg, the price of Indian ones is of around €0.70-0.75/kg and Australian ones almost reach €1/kg."
