Italy: We want to work with Eastern Europe and Russia

The Sicilian potato and carrot season has just started so it is still too early to talk prices. "So far, we have sold courgettes, artichokes, fennel and green beans. The price for courgettes went from €1.80/kg in December to €0.90/kg in March," explain Marco Gravagna and Laura Guastella, managers of organic commercial farm Vincenzo Gravagna. According to them, the drop in prices is due to the weather, which "favoured produce from Spain and Morocco, where there was a better climate."

As regards the recent stall in the carrot market, they say that "the situation is not exceptional at the moment, but we do sell. There is a slight drop in demand and prices are rather low, but it is not a bad year."

The company already works with France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, England and Switzerland. "Currently, we sell most of the produce to France, as they particularly enjoy organic produce. At a domestic level, we work a little with Northern Italy." The objective is to work with Russia, Poland, Latvia and Estonia.

Established in 1975, the company is one of the leading organic businesses in Sicily, with 150 ha and a 5,000 sq m warehouse. It also has 2 photovoltaic plants to supply the warehouse and provide energy for irrigation.

Fabio Sudano, agronomist, said that "this year, we are producing Arinda, Nicola, Bellini and Spunta potatoes, but varieties can vary from year to year depending on the contracts with our clients. As regards carrots, we have Dordogne and Musico."

"The season started well, but there have been a few problems due to rain. The situation should improve soon though. Both potatoes and carrots look good, so we are talking about high-quality produce." Yields should be good with adequate profits.

Once harvested, produce is taken to the warehouse for processing. The produce is unloaded in specific stocking areas where a document with all the info concerning traceability is filled in.

The company is a founding member of the PGI Ispica new carrots consortium and is BioAgriCert s.r.l., Biodinamica, BIO SUISSE, GlobalGAP and NOP/USDA certified.
