Canada: Prince Edward Island to get new potato wash facility

RWL Holdings Ltd. in Travellers Rest is set to open a high-speed potato wash facility using the most innovative sorting technology.

The equipment will sort potatoes by size and type on a just-in-time basis, making large loads of potatoes for processors like McCains and Cavendish Farms easy pickings.

"With the new technology our company is helping to modernize the potato industry here in Prince Edward Island," said RWL Holdings co-owner Austin Roberts. "This service to Island potato growers will help increase their profits as well as help ensure the processors are receiving the best possible product."

The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, has invested $500,000 towards the purchase of this new equipment. The Government of Prince Edward Island, through the Department of Agriculture and Forestry’s Growing Forward 2 Programs, has invested a total of $69,000 in this project.

Provincial Agriculture Minister George Webster added, "This new equipment will help to increase the competitive position of the Island’s potato industry and achieve higher returns for producers from the marketplace.”

The equipment should also cut down on the overall waste of potatoes and allow for better product quality control.
