Mild weather in Belgium has caused vegetables to mature early
The vegetables are ripe but no one is buying them. Not everyone feels like eating cabbage when it is 12 degrees outside. ''People are looking for salads and summer vegetables'' says a fruit and vegetable merchant.
Many leek, chicory and cabbage producers are forced to throw away their produce or sell at a loss. ''We offer 10kg cases for 3 Euro, but the winter produce just does not sell''. The cut prices don't seem to be working and according to professionals seasons no longer exist. ''We sold 15 trays of strawberries although we're not even meant to be selling them this season'' says the merchant.
