"Higher banana prices on the free market compared to last year"

The banana market is presently very good. So says Hans Maagendans from banana ripening company Banafood in Straelen. "The conditions are very good. We have not had a real winter this year, there is little competing fruit and the prices on the free market are a little higher than last year."

"In Ecuador the FOB prices sky-rocketed so the supply is not overly large and supply and demand of green bananas is nicely balanced," continues Hans. "For the future I expect a slightly stronger banana market. March and April are still usually good months for the banana."

According to the banana ripener the price per kilo offered by supermarkets is beginning to recover. "Supply and demand is also normal. The lower prices of last year has brought financial loss to many companies. More retailers are now gently returning to the old price level."
