Italy: New Metis® plums on the market

They are a cross between plums and apricots and their name means Most Exciting Tasty Inter Specific. Metis® is a new generation of plums created thanks to a varietal improvement technique developed in the 1950s by Glen Bradford.

In Europe it will be marketed by a network of authorised distributors, i.e. Blue Whale in France, Royal in Spain, and POs Minguzzi and Granfrutta Zani in Italy.

FreshPlaza talked to Giancarlo Minguzzi for a comment: "The product is available in a range of colours and tastes between June and September. The quality is constant throughout the season and they have excellent peel, flesh and aroma."

The colour ranges between yellow, red and dark purple and the flesh is also yellow-pinkish. The sugar level is high (up to 16° Brix) and the flesh is compact, meaning it is easy to carry around as a snack.

"The line will be available starting from 2014 and we are planning on sowing 300 hectares in Europe. This year we will be cultivating 30 hectares, which will become 80 in the next three years."
