"Fruit Logistica 2014, Hall 2.2 - Stand A-02 ("Italy" area)"

Italy: Gruppo Mazzoni diversifies its offer

The 2013 campaign was positive in the first six months for all winter and spring produce. The volume of apples, pears, kiwis, strawberries, carrots, melons etc. was lower than the previous year but value increased by 9%.

Strawberries were the only ones affected by competition from other countries and damaged by bad weather during harvesting.

The summer campaign was not brilliant, but Sergio Trevisan (in the photo), sales manager, confirmed that they were satisfied after all.

"The medium-early peach and nectarines varieties (+20% with respect to 2012) sold well on the domestic and foreign markets straight away, when demand was still strong. Angeleno plums did OK, but exports were 30% lower, especially those towards Eastern Europe."

Things changed at the end of August. Summer pears did poorly and apples had to deal with overproduction problems and lower demand from Eastern Europe, as there was produce coming from other areas.

"Autumn pears started well but demand was not as good between September and December and therefore prices dropped. Kiwis did well, especially as exports towards extra-European countries increased."

Even the 2013 melon and watermelon campaign was not brilliant, but the group will be back on the market in 2014 nonetheless with 15,000 tons of produce. The company invested on varietal innovation and will also continue selling seedless watermelons.

The carrot campaign was excellent. The productive process was improved and costs were contained, as "new cooling techniques mean we can sell to countries 4-5,000 km away maintaining the freshness of the produce."
Potatoes also did well, even though in the last few months prices dropped slightly due to lower sales.

"We are optimistic with regards to frozen produce, as sales went up by 20% also thanks to the fact that we started selling new varieties of strawberries and new lines abroad," explains Nicola Borgatti, sales manager of Mazzoni Surgelati.

At the Anuga international food fair in Cologne, Mazzoni will present its new peeled and/or frozen PDO garlic from Voghera (photo above). It has excellent organoleptic techniques and it benefits from a short chain.

"2014 has only just started but, despite the global economic difficulties, the group is still willing to diversify its offer (oranges, clementines, fresh vegetables and garlic)," concludes Sergio Trevisan.

The Mazzoni team will attend Fruit Logistica 2014, in Hall 2.2/Stand A-02.
