Biodegradable packaging - less environmental impact across the supply chain

Kesko Food was the first in Europe to start using Plastiroll's new and innovative biodegradable, transparent packaging film.

Kesko Food started cooperation with Plastiroll Oy Ltd concerning the packaging of Pirkka vegetables some years ago. Packaging material has been and continues to be developed in close cooperation with Plastiroll and Uudenmaan Vihannes Oy, the vegetable packaging company.

The packaging material is made from starch based renewable raw material, and since it does not contain any genetically modified organisms, it is GMO free. The packaging can be disposed of by composting. Packaging fresh produce in biodegradable material reduces wastage considerably and also decreases the amount of waste generated from packaging material in retail stores.

Environmental benefits of packaging communicated to store customers
Compostable and 100% biodegradable packaging material is a competitive asset for stores. Kesko Food has communicated the issue widely to customers via both traditional and social media channels. Product labels on packages clearly indicate that the material is biodegradable. In-store material, marketing and communications have been used to increase customer awareness of biodegradable packaging and its properties.

So far, three products have been packed in biodegradable material: onion bunches, Chinese cabbage and leak. Development work continues and Kesko Food is currently exploring possibilities of increasing the use of the material.

Plastiroll will be present at Fruit Logistica at booth B-14 in Hall 8.2
