Europatat welcomes EU school food proposals

Opportunity for ‘Grown your own’ school initiatives

Today the European Commission published its proposal to bring together the School Fruit Scheme and the School Milk Scheme under a joint framework. With the slogan "Eat well - feel good", the enhanced scheme from farm to school will put greater focus on educational measures to improve children's awareness of healthy eating habits, the range of farm produce available, as well as sustainability, environmental and food waste issues. Europatat particularly welcomes the increased focus on educational measures which will become eligible for EU aid, such as ‘Grow your own’ school initiatives including potatoes.

Europatat has been involved in the review process of the school food schemes since the start and has insisted on the opportunities for children to grow their own produce, including potatoes. Whether in a school garden, a classroom or at home, it allows children to value the role of agriculture as they follow the development of the crop during consecutive weeks. The process offers a valuable framework for teachers to discuss the various issues impacting on food production and agriculture.

Several successful ‘Grow your own’ school initiatives are running throughout the EU, and the potato has been a popular crop with many children ever since. These initiatives could be further boosted if they benefit from EU support for educational measures. More importantly the EU support would help to create new initiatives and revive schemes that have been discontinued because EU or national funding were limited in time and logistical costs were prohibitive to organise the scheme entirely private.
