Wilko Fruit B.V.:

EU: Strawberry season three weeks ahead of schedule

“The strawberry season started 3 weeks earlier than last year at Wilkofruit; we already received the first ones from Huelva and Morocco in December. The first strawberries at Wilkofruit this year came from Egypt during the first week of December.

The campaign has been moving slowly up to now, due to the continuous rainy and cloudy weather in Huelva. The price level is also lower than this time last year. The weather is fantastic now and production is increasing with optimal quality.

The highlight at Wilkofruit this season, is the incorporation with strawberry and raspberry growers in Morocco, where the current volumes are higher, along with fantastic quality. These berries are being very well received by our customers. Right now Wilkofruit is receiving strawberries from both countries.

Last year Wilkofruit started with the Dutch packing of 8x500 in wooden boxes in their own registered brand called Gaudias.

The main varieties in Huelva are “Fortuna”, “Sabrina”, “Splendor” and “Festival”, in Morocco it's the “Splendor” and “Festival”.

Due to their extra flavour and high quality, Spanish strawberries are always highly appreciated within international markets. However, Spain has to compete with the lower costs in Morocco. Wilkofruit deals in every type of berry, including raspberries and blueberries, alongside the strawberries.

Wilkofruit had an amazing strawberry season last year, with high volumes, good prices, and the company expects to repeat, if not improve, this year.
