Both the domestic and the export markets have been doing well in the last few months, also thanks to a campaign that emphasizes the origin of the produce.
In order to emphasize the origin of blood oranges and promote their characteristics (rich in vitamin C and with the PGI mark), Oranfrizer uses Nerina Chiarenza's Sicilian carts. In Tuscany the Ape 50 will go around 15 stores with the slogan "È l'origine che fa il gusto" (It's the origin that gives the perfect taste).
"Our main market is the domestic one, but we are working on increasing our presence abroad." Currently exports represent 10-12% blood orange sales and 40% of juice sales.
70% of the business is represented by citrus fruit (50,000 tons) though other products such as pomegranates, tomatoes, peppers, Syracuse new potatoes and summer fruit are becoming increasingly important.
Pomegranates represent a new challenge for Oranfizer. "We have decided to start producing fruits with a high nutritional content and pomegranates are rich in anthocyanins."
"We are working to reunite all producers from Sicily, Puglia and Calabria in order to create a consortium to better reach markets in Italy and abroad."
This season, the new multi-language packaging was introduced (in the photo) for oranges destined to the foreign market. All nutritional information is available in English, French and German.
"In addition, oranges are more appealing in the new packaging and there is also a recipe, as they can even be used to flavour particular dishes."
