Italy: Jolly cooperative aims at increasing apple production in 2014

"2013 was characterised by various ups and downs. The 15% drop in kiwi production was compensated by a 20% increase in plums (Angeleno varieties). We increased the number of our partners, especially from Piedmont and Lazio, but most of all we finished our new warehouse," says the chairman of Jolly cooperative, Giancarlo Bodrero, who in 2013 was also deputy-chairman of Aspofruit PO.

The capacity of the warehouse was extended by another 2,000 tons and is now equipped with 23 cold storage units. In addition, the cooperative invested on a new punnet packaging plant. "We sort of celebrated our 25th anniversary," says the chairman.

Bodrero (in the photo with sales manager Valentina Rivoira) talked about the difficulties recently encountered by kiwis and peaches (because of bacteriosis and depreciation respectively) and stated that, in 2014, the cooperative will work mainly with apples, also thanks to the fact that Cuneo red apples obtained the PGI mark. "We aim at producing 5,000 tons already in 2014."

As regards the PGI mark, the chairman says that "of course it is an opportunity for companies to promote their products, however there is the risk that it could remain just a sticker, especially because of the bureaucracy and the limits of the specifications, which sometimes are just unrealistic."

The cooperative will still grow kiwis and apples, in fact they are "currently working on selecting new peach cultivars with our technical staff that can work especially in China, as last year we were officially authorised to export there."

He also adds that, "at the same time, we are testing kiwi clones in order to improve existing cultivars. This is also being done with the aim of improving the intercontinental market share, as in 2013, 20% of the production was shipped to Brazil, Dubai, Egypt and Canada. 70% went to Europe and only 10% was destined to the domestic market."

As regards the latest summer apple campaign, Bodrero comments that "Gala apples did well in 2013 and this year we will also plant another interesting variety, thanks to which we will be able to counterbalance the drop in production of autumn kiwis."

"We will attend Fruit Logistica with the aim of strengthening and optimising the relations with our clients. Nowadays, clients need to be selected based on the likelihood that they will pay. Only those who are serious about what they are doing contribute to the future of the sector."

Jolly cooperative will take part to Fruit Logistica, Hall 2.2 - Stand B-01 ("MADE IN PIEMONTE" area):Giancarlo Bodrero and sales manager Valentina Rivoira will represent the company.
