South Africa: Good 2014 pomegranate season on the cards

The 2013 packing season has been an excellent one for South African pomegranate growers. Sapex Exports received pomegranates from growers all over South Africa and exports were made to over 20 different countries. According to Kobus Louw from Sapex, prices were better than the 2012 season, sustained by a good quality product. There was a slight increase in the general size of the pomegranates, mainly as a result of older, larger trees.

Most trees show adequate flowering and set

A good pomegranate season for 2014 is already on the cards for the South African growers. Most orchards are at the moment in the last stages of flowering and set. Flowering has been very good and most orchards have enough crop to select the best fruit for the final stage of the growing season.

South African pomegranates are already an established product on most markets of the world and the challenge is to keep quality at a high level to ensure that the increasing volume can be absorbed without affecting the price levels.
