India: Horticorp to sell ready-to-cook vegetables

The Kerala State Horticultural Products Development Corporation Ltd (Horticorp) is planning to introduce cut vegetables in Kozhikode market. The move is in the product of the successful sale of cut vegetables.

The ready-to-cook cut vegetables will be made available near railway stations and bus stands in the city. In the initial phase of the project, Horticorp will be introducing vegetables required for preparing 'Sambar,' and 'Aviyal'.

"Kozhikode has been selected for the project following the suggestion of agriculture minister K P Mohanan," said K Prathapan, managing director of Horticorp. "The project was a huge success in Thiruvananthapuram and are selling out around 200 packets of cut vegetables every day," he added.

It would be a boon, especially for working women and bachelors. According to the plans of the Horticorp, a packet of cut vegetable weighs 360 to 400 gram and will be sold for Rs 20 ($0.32 USD). Kozhikode has large number of working women who land at railway stations and bus stands after a long day's work and journey. Many of them would surely be happy to access our cut veg packets, he added.

The vegetables will be sold out under the brand name 'Amruth'.

The shelf life of the product will be six hours and it can be increased by refrigerating the product, an official with Horticorp said adding that the plastic cover would prevent microbial infection. Preparations for commencing the project is on and is expected to begin in January.

The Horticorp is also planning to set up a vegetable procurement centre in Kozhikode spending Rs 2 crore to help farmers sell out their produces at maximum price. Fresh vegetables procured from farmers will be distributed as cut vegetables, said the managing director.
