"Ive Lambert: "Early arrival with higher brix"

First Peruvian mangoes arrive at Star fruit

Mangoes by air from Peru have been available at Star fruit for some weeks now, but yesterday the first containers of the Inca brand arrived. "The first boat arrived earlier than previous years," said Ive Lambert. Last year we did not see any arrive before week 52 and the Peruvian harvest was limited because a number of trees didn't bloom, hence less fruit. This year the fruit has arrived earlier than expected because the trees blossomed earlier."

High brix
Ive expects a normal Peruvian season. "Product will be more spread out this year. The quality of the fruit now is good and tasty. The brix sits between 13 and 14, and sometimes 14.5. Compared to last year, the first containers only sat with a brix of 9. Of course, with air freight it is another story as they arrive with a higher brix."

According to the trader, "Prices on the market sit between 5.5 and 6.5 Euro. Last year was a bit higher but that was because at the end of the year the market was empty and people were waiting. Now there is plenty of Brazilian produce on the market. The Brazilian fruit is less colourful than in previous years, but there is plenty of the Kent variety. The only problem is that people will buy the Peruvian fruit because of its redder skin and Brazilian will be left putting some pressure on the market. Brazilian produce will be available until January."

Stable
Lambert expects the next few weeks to remain stable. "We should be able to hold the present prices although they might jump up in the week before Christmas, but should, otherwise, be pretty constant, there are enough Mangoes on the market. Arrival of Peruvian 'boat-mangoes' will continue until the end of April. We also have all our varieties of air freight mangoes available: Sweet, Passion, Frutas Latinas, Inkanto. All the mangoes are beautifully packaged and presented."
