Results from studies in United States and Spain

"Corrugated cardboard reduces cost of fruit and veg, supermarket sales rise"

The results of two recent case studies have been released. In America one study showed that tomatoes transported in corrugated cardboard from Mexico to Houston were 25% more cost effective than plastic crates. Higher transport and handling costs necessitated by the need to clean the plastic containers and their return made the difference. Both growers and retailers saved money by using corrugated cardboard. In the case studies growers were 17% and retailers 12% more expensive when using plastic crates. Also, retailers in the both the US and Europe support recycling. They helped increase the recycling percentage of corrugated cardboard to 91%.

The whole report is available for download on the American Corrugated Packaging Alliance (CPA) website.

In Spain (Madrid en Barcelona) tests were performed on the supermarket shop floor. Plastic crates were replaced by corrugated cardboard in attractive designs. They gave extra information about the product and (brand) experience for the customer. The result was remarkable: sales rose by 5%. Research shows that the consumer is more environmentally aware and prefers recyclable packaging made from renewable raw materials.

In The Netherlands Lidl is an example of how corrugated cardboard contributed to their success. This retailer recently came 4th as best provider in the fruit and vegetable sector.

Retail Packaging expertise available
The branch association of corrugated cardboard in Belgium and The Netherlands think it very important that retailers are kept well informed of the important role and potential of corrugated cardboard packaging in their search for sustainable business opportunities. Specific expertise is therefore now just a call away to an expert in the field of retail packaging.
