Larger, cheaper Chinese onions proving popular in India
Sameer Sheikh, a wholesale onion and potato dealer in the Kalupur vegetable market, said that 4,000 kg of Chinese onions have been bought for the local market. "This Chinese variety is huge in size compared to local produce and is cheaper," said Sheikh.
Sheikh said that while the local onions weigh roughly 100g, the Chinese variety weighs anywhere between 450g to 600g. "These onions are huge in size and are being bought by people who use the vegetable in bulk, especially in hotels and restaurants," said Sheikh.
However, the onion may not find many fans in the long run as it is rather bland in taste which is a disappointment for people who are used to the pungent taste of raw onions that are known to bring a tear or two to their eyes.
