The rains and lack of cold temperatures will cause an historic delay in the kiwi harvest in Spain's main producing region. The technician of Kiwi Atlántico, Martín Fernández, confirmed yesterday that "over the past decade, the ripening has never been as late as this year." The harvest should have already begun at the region's 250 hectares; however, the campaign will not start until early next week, at best.
"The fruit has only reached 5.5 degrees Brix, and it cannot be harvested until it has at least 6.5," explained the technician. The sector is not worried, but there are some areas of concern. The weather conditions must change to prevent the risk of fungus diseases spreading. At the moment, not only is the fruits quality guaranteed, but the harvest is also expected to be 20% larger than last year, with overall better calibres.
