Russia: As market decreases, demand for canned vegetables grows

If the ratio of home processed and industrial processed foods on the Ukranian market of canned vegetables is about 50/50, then in Russia the share of industrial canned vegetables is much higher.

The share of industrial canned vegetables will increase with the growth of population in large cities. Thus, according to the study conducted by Intesco Research Group, "The market of canned vegetables: forecast for 2013-2016", the consumption of canned vegetables in Russia is more than 8 kg per capita. This figure dropped slightly in 2012, but the decline has more to do with the redistribution of product categories within the product group.

The potential of the Russian market is quite high. Thus, taking into account European experience of consumption and rapid development of the Horeca sector in Russia, it is necessary to use the opportunity to expand the production of vegetable jams and dressings. Assorted canned vegetables are also in high demand. In 2012, their production increased by 18.6% compared to 2011. And in the first quarter of the current year the volume of production exceeded 2.5 times the corresponding figures of the previous year.
