India: Groupon offering onion deals amidst price hike

Groupon India, the shopping website, which provides daily deal on local commodities, services and events, has joined hands with a Delhi-based wholesaler to sell onions at the one-digit price in 78 cities across the country for the next seven days. The sale began on Thursday.

"It is a very simple deal. We are a deal site and in current situation where onions prices are skyrocketing we are offering onions at Rs 9 per kg ($0.13 USD). The onions will be home delivered to buyers," PTI quoted Groupon India's CEO Ankur Warikoo, as saying.

The company will sell 3,000 kgs of onions a day to ensure good quality customers will get their orders within 10 days of placing the orders for the next seven days. Warikoo said they have planned to sell 3,000 kgs of onions a day so that the quality is not compromised. He said they will be taking help of several logistic partners to deliver the vegetables. Onions, put in special moisture-free packets, will be delivered to the customers by Blue Dart, a partner of Groupon. Only registered users of the site can take advantage of the deal with a single deal available per user.

Groupon expects more than 20,000 people to utilise the opportunity to get cheap onions. Warikoo said they were confident that the deal will be a hit and people will buy till the last onion is sold. Retail price of onions have shot up to Rs 80 per kg ($1.21 USD) in most parts of the country in the last one-and-a-half month, sparking off huge controversy in the political circles. Groupon India is part of a 48-country portfolio of Groupon Global and has 200 million subscribers and over $5billion in annual sales.
