20th anniversary of Reyes Gutiérrez

Spain: Mango and avocado: two subtropical fruits in constant growth

Born in a family always linked to the horticultural business, Juan Antonio Reyes naturally inherited the entrepreneurial spirit and in 1993 founded the firm Reyes Gutiérrez, based in Malaga, which started as trader of potatoes, raisins and avocados from the region.

"20 years of hard work have led to today's great business figures. We can stress that, thanks to the professionalism of many, Reyes Gutiérrez is now a leader in the sector as a specialist in the selling of mangoes and avocados all year round, growing a wide range of the most important varieties," explains the manager.

Mango and avocado: two "fashionable" subtropical fruits
"Luckily, the consumption of both mangoes and avocados is growing steadily due to their nutritional benefits and culinary possibilities. In high cuisine, these subtropical fruits are fashionable, as both fruits combine well with sweet or savoury flavours, leading to endless possible combinations," says Juan Antonio Reyes.

The company sells the most important varieties both for avocados (Pinkerton, Hass, Fuerte, Reed and Bacon) as well as mangoes (Oesteen, Keitt and Kent), among others, both from Malaga, which is Europe's only producing region, and from South American countries when their season arrives, working with several commercial references, such as CASADO, MESARA and CASADO PREMIUM, with the latter being characterised by being "a very high quality and carefully selected fruit."

"We export all varieties equally to the main European markets: France, United Kingdom, Nordic Countries and Germany, as well as others in Eastern Europe, but without a doubt, France is the largest avocado consumer."

According to Juan Antonio Reyes, a lower production is expected this coming 2013/2014 campaign for both mangoes and avocados, although calibres will be larger.

The green skin avocado varieties will concentrate between the months of October and March, and the Hass from early December to May.

As for mangoes, the Osteen variety is the most popular. "We must bear in mind that there are many young plantations which are only just starting to produce and which are not sufficiently controlled yet, but our production volumes will reach between 10,000 and 12,000 tonnes."

Reyes Gutiérrez will celebrate its 20th anniversary at Fruit Attraction
"There will be some special events at the stand, as it will be an important meeting between the company's staff, its clients and providers. Furthermore, we have created a logo to commemorate our 20 years of hard work which will be displayed in promotion and communication material," explains the manager.

"Our goal is to continue providing a high quality service, meeting the strictest and most demanding standards. We are strongly focused on promoting our Premium brand, CASADO PREMIUM, both for mangoes and avocados. We are specialists in the field and passionate about our jobs," he added.
