"Many vegetables have done well this season"
Van de Watering Belgium extends Passione assortment
The market situation changes day by day in the fruit and vegetable trade, but in general Patrick Slegers of the Belgian department of Van de Watering is positive. "Over the whole season pepper has been a strong product. Cucumbers have also done well. Aubergines and strawberries were decent. Most of these products had better seasons than in previous years. The main reason for this in peppers was that there was a lot less production. This was because a number of larger growers had dropped out or switched to other products."
Recovery
"A product that is having a lot more difficulty at the moment is the tomato. It's no better in the next country. We have a structural overflow in Holland, Belgium and France. We all had massive production at the same time. We usually sell a lot in France, but there was also price pressure there due to large volumes. The lesser tomato market isn't something short lived, but this has been going on for a number of years now. Due to the circumstances everything is taking a bit longer than usual. But I am certain that the market will recover again. You just need one little hole somewhere and you're in. But it's too early for that at the moment. I hope the right time comes soon, as we've been on minimum prices for a while now."
Extension of Passione brand Van de Watering Belgium is supplying more and more products under their quality brand Passione. "We are now doing tomatoes, vine tomatoes, strawberries, red fruit, peppers and chicory. The range is being extended step by step to a comprehensive package. The brand is most growing and is more identifiable. Even when the fruit and vegetable market is difficult our brand continues to do extremely well because the customer knows that our brand symbolises quality and service. This is a long term investment." Van de Watering Belgium has now been active in Sint-Katelijne-Waver for over a year. Salesmen Paul van Remoortel and Patrick Slegers take care of business there.
