"Next week serious peak in supply soft fruit"
Blackberries and red currants
"Also for blackberries and red currants - we slowly receive more. The volume is still limited, but will increase towards the end of the week. The slow supply is mainly caused by the cold and dark Spring" Johan explains. "The area is not bigger. Over the season we expect a comparable volume to last year, although I am afraid that everything will come at the same time." According to the soft fruit salesman blackberries and red currants are sold at good prices. Looking at the prices of the same periods last year than those fore the red currants are at the same level, but for blackberries they are quite a bit lower. In general, the prices of red currants are more stable than those for blackberries." The blackberries and red currants are mainly sold locally by BelOrta.
Packing
The small fruit is offered in dishes of half kilo's or 125 gr. "The packing did not change much in the course of the years. With raspberries there is, from the market, more demand for a smaller packing of 1 kilo instead of 1.5 kilo. Then there are eight dishes instead of twelve dishes of 125 gr. in a box."
Serious peak
The coming period will be difficult for soft fruit according to Vergote. "We now expect a serious peak because every thing will come together. The season is very late and started slowly. The setting of the first fruit was less. This has caused shorted bunches with red currants and smaller fruit with black currants. This season we actually went directly to an average size of the fruit. The price is still good now. We will have to wait for what will happen when more supply arrives."
New harvest organic blackberries
From to-day sufficient blackberries will be available at Veiling BelOrta. These blackberries, also named cassis, are as a standard offered in a dish of 125 gr., but buyer-packings are also available. "Blackberries are really vitamin bombs" says Johan Vergote. "They are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. We are therefore convinced that both the specialized wholesale, retail and processors will appreciate this new harvest. "The blackberries, which are being harvested now, are the first from a planting in 2009. They are grown 100% organically with respect for the environment. The season still runs till the middle of August."
