Increased reuse and recycling of pallets in Spain

The recession: unfortunately quite a familiar concept for most Spaniards, which has already led to the demise of hundreds of firms in the pallet manufacturing sector, as the production of new pallets has fallen considerably in recent years. The National Statistics Institute (INE) estimates 2011's production at 38 million wooden pallets; nevertheless, the number of transactions in the pallet market is on the rise, with an estimated growth of 7%, mostly because of their frequent reuse, so the recession itself can actually create opportunities.

Just a year and a half after being founded, PRIECO has seen nothing but the permanent growth of its pallet recycling, logistics and storage services, which correspond to 80% of its activities, as well as of the recycling of packaging such as Big Bags or Boxes for the food sector, among others.

The need to save for the companies requiring pallets has paved the way for the development of our pallet and packaging recycling business, and for us
as an authorised firm for the management and transport of waste by the Valencian Government," says Ana Díez Alonso, associate and one of the managers of PRIECO.

"If a new pallet costs 10 Euro, the same one recycled costs around 4 Euro, depending on the pallet's quality and shelf life. These pallets can generally still be used for a long time, consequently leading to great savings compared to what the costs would be with new pallets and contributing to the protection of the environment, as we prevent the cutting down of trees and the accumulation of waste," says Ana Díez.

"We buy the pallets at waste disposal sites - large national waste collection and management firms, which no longer need them after giving them one or more uses. Some simply wish to dispose of them because of the room they take in their warehouses, although the majority still choose to try using them in one form or another. We also have clients who request the collection, transport and storage of products and even their reparation and treatment, thereby creating a "pool" of pallets and providing them with the necessary logistics services for their business so that they do not require extra delegations or risk losing a pallet or packaging of their property."

"Additionally, pallets are treated differently depending on the product they are designed for, or on the destination country, through various phytosanitary treatments or the adaptation to the NIMF-15 regulation."

The firm, based in the Spanish province of Teruel, has delegations in strategic places, with warehouses in several points in Spain (Valencia, Castellon, Mallorca, Ibiza, Canarias, Albacete and Seville) and it would consider expanding internationally in the future. "Although PRIECO is expanding very rapidly, for now we want to establish ourselves in the Spanish market, expanding our services to make them quicker and more efficient and be consequently able to offer more competitive prices."

"Offering a good product and a good service are the keys to success for us. Prices matter in times of crisis, but they are not deemed as important when excellence in quality and service are provided," concludes Ana Díez.
