Compost Label

Italy: Packaging is getting more and more sustainable

The food packaging sector is aiming at the creation of an integrated chain to improve the sustainability of products from fields to the tables of consumers.

Compost LabelĀ® biodegradable and compostable stickers, made in Mater-BiĀ® by Polycart Spa in collaboration with GPT-Gruppo Poligrafico Tiberino, are ideal. They are mostly used for food products even though other uses are currently under evaluation.

For example, using these stickers in fruit and vegetable scales together with biodegradable bags solves the disposal problem and exempts families from buying additional waste bags for composts.

FreshPlaza talked to Luca Bianconi, manager of Polycart SpA's project, to know the latest news on the product.

"We are currently producing new kinds of glue and other materials. Samples are being certified and should be ready shortly so we can start selling."

"We have worked on both their machinability, so they can be used in high speed plants, and on their manual application. We have also reduced thickness in order to reduce prices. Not only that, we have carried out tests so we can be able to supply big numbers without losing sight of the renewable content of the product."

"Polycart has also signed an agreement with the Ministry for the Environment to analyse the carbon footprint of Compost Label, thanks to which it will be possible to further reduce emissions, limiting the impact on climate," continues Luca.

"Our R&D department, GPT and other partners are also working on packaging for products that are not necessarily fruit and vegetables."

"We are the perfect example of how sharing information leads to interesting results which would be unthinkable for a company on its own," concludes Luca Bianconi.
