According to Antonio, at the moment, the market has a downward trend and there are three main reasons:
- increase of the production in Italy, from North to South (Sicily included) and therefore produce available in all wholesale markets;
- drop in demand/consumption in the last 3-4 months, which led to surplus stocks of last season's produce, including that from Argentina. The latter was difficult to sell because of a high purchasing price that was not met by the sale price. As a result, much of the garlic in the EU is still unsold;
- prices of the Chinese product dropped by 50% with regards to last year.
As regards the new production, Antonio announces that, "prices at the moment are 20-30% lower than the previous campaign."
The varieties that are cultivated in Italy and those imported are mainly part of these categories:
- traditional white garlic (French, Spanish and California cultivar) with big bulbs and big cloves;
- red garlic from Spain (Morado), France (Rosè de Lautrec), Italy (Rosso di Sulmona e di Paceco), Argentina and Brazil.
"The early produce is sold from May to September. White and red garlic from June to the following year thanks to refrigeration."
Markets
The European Union produces and consumes garlic, and Spanish exports to South America, Caribbean and even North Africa are holding on. "Spain also exports to various countries in the EU, even though in some, like Italy or France, garlic is also produced," concludes Antonio.
