Sixty four year old Hisashi Tarukawa ended his life in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Prior to that, he was prohibited from selling his vegetables because of the disaster. Tarukawa's world collapsed. Hisashi Tarukawa's family took legal steps against energy company TEPCO after his death. They held TEPCO responsible for the death of a family member and demanded compensation. Amazingly, this was ultimately effective: at the end of May, TEPCO admitted that the nuclear disaster played a role in the grower's suicide. Subsequently they settled out of court with the family. They mutually agreed to keep quiet on the details.
This is a unique case, as TEPCO hadn't responded to this type of allegations until now. However, the case isn't closed for the family. They want TEPCO to give an official apology. The energy company doesn't want to go that far. For legal reasons,TEPCO doesn't want to create a precedent.
