"Arjan Verhagen: "Exclusive European sales for berry grower Midgold"

Netherlands: Prima Natura specialises in the sale of South American fruit

Prima Natura was established in 2012 in cooperation with the the Uruguayan grower Midgold S.A. "It is a step forward for Midgold to set up this European sales office. By doing this, growers can have more of a part in market development and will have more control over products that are exported," says commercial manager, Arjan Verhagen. He is hard at work to make Prima Natura an independant import and export company. The storage and transfer of fruit takes place in the LBP warehouse in Rotterdam.

Prima Natura began with the import and export of the fruit from Midgold, but also works with other suppliers. "We have also imported blueberries from Argentina and Chile along with other products from various South American countries. We have noticed that the fact that the owner is South American, means that many growers trust and want to work with us," says Arjan.

Prima Natura will intially focus on blueberries from Uruguay (beginning of September until the middle of December) followed by Chile (end of December to the end of March). "The season in Uraguay went very well, but the quality of the Chilean fruit season was difficult," says Arjan. "The berry market is always growing and sales are profiting from the attention regarding the healthy aspects of blue berries. Alongside that, we are also active in frozen berries which is very interesting for us due to the shelf life of two years along with the opportunity to use the fruit not suitable for the fresh market."

"We are also looking towards other products from South America. Pomegranates have arrived from Argentina and we are now starting with the first kaki fruits from Uruguay. The first kaki's have arrived and they are of good quality. The fruit from Uruguay has to compete with South Africa. We hope to lay a good foundation this year so we can continue to grow next year."

"Our pomegranates are also a starting venture. It still has a small production because the plantation was only planted two years ago. It is the Wonderful variety which are very nicely coloured. There will be much more fruit next year compared to this year and we are hoping to grow together," says Arjan. He is focussed on the sale of fruit and building up new customers along with the existing customers of Midgold.
