14 Pepper-corers get a final inspection in Horst before transport.
Coastal Green critically examined its management and business processes in 2012. Both economical and sustainable aspects were scrutinized. The company that cuts its peppers with conventional water cutters lost no less than $ 5,000,000 per year in waste. A water cutter doesn't position a pepper before it's cut. This amounts to a cutting loss of 35% to 40%, and the core and stem still needing to be separated from the cut mass afterwards.
The innovative pepper processing machines of Dofra Foodtec in Horst came out on top by far in a study examining alternative methods of coring and slicing peppers. "No other brand of pepper processing machine came close to the efficiency of the machines by Dofra Foodtec," says John de Groot, CEO of Dofra Foodtec, proudly. "After removing the stem and core of the pepper, our total weight loss is 15% for the smallest peppers, down to only 8% for the larger ones," according to de Groot. It was immediately obvious to Coastal Green that switching over to Dofra Foodtec machines was 'the only sensible option'. "With a return on investment in less than one year, the decision was quickly made," according to de Groot.
The 14 pepper coring machines and its peripherals will be installed at Coastal Green, together with Dofra Foodtec's American partner company, Heinzen Manufacturing International. "We are hoping this project will be an eye-opener for other pepper processors in the US still operating with traditional water cutters," concludes de Groot.
