Melissa's new offerings make healthy eating more convenient

Melissa's, a leading US distributor of specialty fresh produce and foods processed from fresh produce, introduced three new products at this month's United Fresh Expo. All three products combine the healthy qualities of vegetables with convenient packaging that makes it easy for consumers to eat right.

Melissa's Cleaned and Sliced Leeks is a 6-ounce package of cleaned and ready-to-use leeks. Melissa's Robert Schueller noted that leeks (a product which many US consumers may not be familiar with) are easy to incorporate into meals.

“Leeks have been misunderstood by most people in the US,” said Schueller. “Basically, people lack the education on how to prepare them.” Because leeks are grown in sandy loam soil that often remains on the product, consumers have to know how to clean them before cooking. Melissa's offering turns what could be a confounding vegetable into a healthy, viable option for consumers.

“The leek is related to both onions and garlic, but it's milder in flavor and fragrance,” said Schueller. “So it's primarily used in soups and stews, though it can also be used in salads or just cooked with a combination of vegetables for a side dish.”

Another new product from Melissa's is their Roasted Baby Dutch Potatoes. They combine Melissa's Baby Dutch Yellow potatoes and Ruby Gold potatoes in a microwaveable bowl. The prep time for the 12-ounce package of potatoes is three minutes in the microwave or five minutes on the stove.

“The baby roasted potatoes make the perfect side dish to any meal,” said Schueller. “They're seasoned with olive oil, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper, so they're ready-to-eat warmed or cold.” The modified atmosphere packaging gives the potatoes a good shelf life in refrigeration, so they can be stored away as healthy side dish.

In the snacking category, Melissa's also introduced single-serving packages of spicy edamame. The seven-ounce pods contain ready-to-eat edamame seasoned with sesame, soy sauce, ginger and togarashi seasoning. Schueller noted that the snack can be enjoyed right out of the bag, or it can be heated up in the microwave.
