20th of June in Lille

France: Open day at wholesalers market

The wholesalers market in Lille is situated in the North of France nearby the Belgian border in a metropolitan area with around 1.5 million residents. The market was built and began in 1972 and occupies an area of 40 hectares. The activities which will take place will be performed by 50 companies who specialise primarily in fruit and vegetables. There are also a few wholesalers who deal in flowers and dry goods. The wholesalers market in Lille is located in the heart of the secured commercial activity zone in Lomme, was founded in 1972 by Arthur Notebart, the then mayor of Lomme.

Alongside wholesalers, there is also a specific area for local growers where they can present and sell their goods. The market has around 2,000 customers which includes retailers, restaurants and caterers. The wholesalers market is ASHA certified. This means that they are focused on food safety and quality. As a result, the market was awarded gold at the WUWM (World Union of Wholesale Market).

They are busy with a project involving logistics, which is still in the experimental phase. The project is regarding multi-model urban transport and that clean transport is used to deliver goods. This is to reduce pollution in the city.

The market is opened from Monday to Friday from 06:00 to 20:00. Special open days will be organised for professionals. The first will take place on the 20th of June. This will involve taste testing apricots and tomatoes.
