John Grootsdcholten, Daily Fresh Radish:

"Supply and demand - radishes in nice balance"

The continuing low temperatures have caused a considerably lower production of radishes all over Europe. "Traditionally the demand for radish increases when the weather is warm, but as the production is low everywhere, supply and demand are nicely in balance," according to John Grootscholten of Daily Fresh Radish from Naaldwijk.

According to the grower - at the moment the radish is everywhere, in both export and local market markets. "During Spring there are always a lot of supermarket promotions held all throughout Europe. In the media radishes are always talked about favourably - how healthy they are and the lovely taste of the radish leaf - this of course boosts sales."

Sales of Daily Fresh Radishes are handled by Best of Four. In the Netherlands the company has a market share of about 15%. According to John, the largest reorganisation amongst the radish growers has now ended. "Many small growers left, especially here in the Westland. Only a number of large growers remain. Luckily they cooperate well in the national radish group, amongst others, in the area of promotion and these activities are starting to show results."
