The South African citrus season is well under way at Alliance Fruit, the lemon export finished a couple of weeks ago. Tom Dreyer from the company said the season went well as the volumes out of the earlier producing regions were down. Alliance Fruit exports lemons to the Middle East and Russian markets, they have exported 100,000 cartons of lemons.

The company is now busy with grapefruit exports, Dreyer explains that at the moment they are sending to Europe, Russia and Canada. Exports to Japan and the Far East should commence shortly, although the fruit is of good external quality, the internal quality is very close to complying with the Japanese standard. Testing for internal quality is continuously carried out, and as soon as these standards are met shipments will commence to this market. Dreyer said that for Alliance the Japanese market is a stable, lucrative market for grapefruit where the fruit is sold into programmed business. Alliance Fruit expects to export 480,000 cartons of grapefruit in total to all the markets this season.

The orange season will start at the end of May/beginning of June, with the different Valencia types, Alliance Fruit will export 1 million cartons of oranges to various markets including the Middle and Far East, Russia, Canada and Europe.
