Verita Holland imported 100 containers of pineapples just in the first quarter. The volumes that come to Holland are reasonable stable, but other markets show a huge growth. For instance, the pineapple was virtually unknown product in Turkey a number of years ago, but it is now a considerably established product in Turkish supermarkets. "We started with pallets, and now have a market share of 50% with pineapple in Turkey," says Mert Büke.
Verita provides almost all of the large Turkish retailers with pineapple. The company has now supplied 150 pineapple peelers to supermarkets, which hugely stimulates the sales of pineapple. "Turkey is a strategic market for the coming years for us, with its 75 million inhabitants and growing economy," says Mert. Under the name Dilimler Gida the company now also supplies freshly cut fruits and vegetables to the Turkish supermarkets. This year the company entered a collaboration with Walt Disney to stimulate the consumption among Turkish kids. The goal is to get these products into all Turkish supermarkets.

"For 3.5 years we have been shipping straight from Costa Rice. In the summer Turkey has enough domestic product, but as this period coincides with the 'natural flowering' the market stays in balance neatly," says Mert Büke. Besides Turkey, countries such as Azerbaijan and Georgia are growing buyers, and Russia is a big market for Verita anyway. "The unique thing about our company is that we control the whole chain. For instance, with Vertia Garden we have our own production company of 100 hectares for apples, pears and grapes."
