Seedless mini cucumbers growing in popularity

As one of the largest growers in North America of seedless mini cucumbers, Topline Produce is leading the way in a new trend among produce suppliers. The miniature cucumbers are attractive to consumers as a snack product, and their popularity is on the rise.

Topline grows their mini cucumbers in over 35 acres of greenhouse facilities throughout North America. That makes them the largest grower on the continent, and Topline's Jimmy Coppola noted that the size of their growing operation gives their retail partners the ability to aggressively target consumers.

“Being the largest producers of this item, we have the ability to book business two to three weeks out,” said Coppola. That targeting has been paying off, and the growing popularity of the product has spurred many growers to get into the market. With more growers churning out more product, there's a danger that prices can dip. But Coppola explained that there are several things that Topline, as a market leader, has in its favor to prevent a stagnant market for their new product.

“The supply and demand curves shift without much notice,” said Coppola. “So you have to forecast properly and set up proper ads at the retail level to keep movement steady.” He added that, like with a lot of new products that get popular quickly, many new suppliers can flood the market and depress prices. But because Topline's production cycle for the mini cucumbers can be adjusted quickly, lulls in the market tend to be short-lived. Additionally, Topline strives to distinguish themselves from the competition on the merits of the quality of their product and their customer service.

“We distinguish ourselves with superior quality, fresh packaging and reliable consistency,” said Coppola. “We can package the mini cucumbers in a variety of formats and we work closely with our partners to find new ways of displaying them.”
