Cardboard packaging market share on the rise

Based in the Spanish town of El Ejido, Almeria, one of Europe's largest horticultural producing areas, Ejido Cartón is devoted to the production and commercialisation of cardboard packaging for the agricultural sector and has clients in up to 13 countries in Europe and North Africa.

In an interview with Serafín Mateo, Business Development Director of the firm, we observe the benefits of cardboard packaging and why the sector continues to increase its market share compared to other packaging materials, such as plastic.

"The main differences between cardboard and plastic are those relative to their image and environmental friendliness. Paper is much more ecological and sustainable than plastic and allows for the printing of logos or brands," explains Serafín.

Regarding printing possibilities, "we offer flexographic and photo quality printing to be able to cover all customer needs. At our design department we provide presentation and personalised design ideas for any sort of packaging," he explains.

Photo quality printing is mainly used in baskets or punnets and is referred to as HQ (high quality). "Any model or format can be manufactured with the necessary quality regardless of the product range to which it belongs. Photo quality packages offer optimal support to convey the product's benefits to consumers. We are convinced that it's a good business decision to invest in the presentation of your products, as the investment returns are immediate," he says.

HQ baskets are consequently used to give added value to the product, when there is a message to convey or a brand image, or the firm wishes to give the product attributes such as environmental friendliness or convenience.

Ejido Cartón presents new package made 100% from kraft paper

Ejido Cartón proves its commitment and big contribution to the environment with its eco-friendly package made 100% from kraft paper.

"This new package has several advantages," explains Serafín. "Firstly, it is a very environmentally friendly package, as it is made out of paper produced from sustainable forests, certified by FSC (www.fsc.org) and PEFC (www.pefc.org)."

Additionally, "it resists moisture really well, making it suitable for a large amount of products, and it is very light, leading to minimum waste and facilitating its recycling. It is also an easily customisable packaging which can be printed on and personalised in a variety of ways."

It is worth noting that the final market for these products can be overseas, and it is in the international markets where value added packaging is more widely accepted.

Cardboard packaging sector growing despite the recession

According to Serafín Mateo, the ecological and environmental factors are the best allies for the consumption of this sort of packages.

"Environmental awareness has grown strongly over the past few years, and consequently many customers are starting to refuse plastic packages, mainly in the European markets, and to demand environmentally friendly materials like cardboard.

Horticultural sector defined by packaging

"Horticultural products are always under the threat of turning into featureless commodities, and the import of products from countries with lower production costs is on the rise. If we do nothing against this, we are doomed to compete only in prices," states Serafín.

In this regard, "it is essential to work on differentiation, to which end, packaging, as well as product quality, are the most important variables. Not only is it necessary to be different, you also need to look different. Customers must feel attracted to your product, they need to be persuaded, they must be satisfied and then come back for more. That is the desired cycle. For the first two steps, an attractive package is the great asset."

Finally, we must highlight the value of packaging in terms of food safety. We feel that making an effort in the traceability of products serves no purpose if this is lost once the product reaches the market, making it impossible to identify the batch. In fact, food safety is one of the main concerns for larger distributors, and our packaging offers a solution," he concludes.
