During the last two weeks of March, some of the vegetables grown in Almeria's greenhouses have lost some of their value due to greater competition as a result of various central European countries entering production.
Consequently, in the follow-up report from Andalusia's Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment for the period between 18 and 31 March, prices have fallen for vegetables such as cucumbers, which face strong competition from the Netherlands. This vegetable has lost more than half of the value it had, standing at 0.30 Euro per kilo during the last week of March.
Other products losing value are aubergines, tomatoes or courgettes. In the case of the former, the reason is the decreasing demand from Europe because of the higher temperatures. Their price went from 0.40 to 0.35 Euro per kilo.
"The entry into production of the spring plantations is having an impact on courgette prices." In this regard, Francisco Vargas, president of Asaja Almeria, said this week that, "it is very likely for Almeria's courgette acreage to increase this Spring, which causes uncertainly about the price they will reach." The Administration agrees with this, and adds that, "the product's supply will increase in the coming weeks."
Tomatoes, which according to the Council have reached stability in supply, fell by less than 0.10 Euro per kilo during the last two weeks of March.
