Ecuador: Ecuafoods seeking European markets for its cassavas
Ecuafoods, a food products exporter based in Ecuador, is seeking to expand in the markets where its processed cassava and plantain products are already a success. The firm exports pre-fried cassavas and plantain chips to the United States and Central America, but they believe Europe can be a very good market.
"Europe is a very interesting market because prices are a little higher," said Ricardo Ortiz, Manager of Ecuafoods. It is also promising due to the number of consumers and restaurants with Latin American roots."
"There are lots of Latin American people," said Ortiz, "and pre-fried cassava is a hugely popular product which we would love to introduce in Europe." The advantage of pre-fried cassavas and plantain chips is that they have a long shelf life and logistic costs are lower than with fresh fruit. Besides, selling more Ecuadorian cassavas would help the growers who produce them," added Ortiz.
"We buy our cassavas from people who generally receive very low prices," he explained. "But we offer them a fair price." They also offer them a stable price, and as Costa Rica, with its greater proximity to the United States and Central America, dominates these markets, Europe is a very good option for Ecuafoods.
